Finalist – 2010 Sheldon G. Hayes Award

Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, LLC was a finalist for the 2010 Sheldon G. Hayes Award for the milling and paving of eight miles of I-75 in Sarasota County from exit 220 (University Parkway) to exit 200 (State Road 681). This project was among the select group of seven highly ranked pavements nationwide that were evaluated for the best project in the United States.
The job required the close coordination with all of the different crews and companies that worked on the project. Heavy winter tourist traffic made work more challenging. In addition, the company had to meet very tight restrictions on lane and ramp closures. We had to try to anticipate our nightly production so that we could get our work completed within the windows that were allowed in the contract, stated Leroy Sims, Ajax’s Project Manager.
Ajax Paving Industries used polymer-modified asphalt and Superpave asphalt mixes for the project. Crews worked at night and completed the project on schedule in 95 contract days. The equipment and the personnel that we had on site were the main factors in the good results that we achieved on this project, Sims says.
