Ajax Paving received the 2019 NAPA National Quality in Construction Award for its work on I-94 from Conner Road to 8 Mile Road in Detroit and Harper Woods in Wayne County. The project was a single course overlay on 5.6 miles of three-lane freeway along one of Detroit's busiest commuter freeways, and was restricted to complete weekend closures to complete the work. This project included land balancing, underground utility work, electrical and lighting poles, sub-grade stabilization, aggregate base, and two lifts of HMA for a total of 4” of HMA, and pavement markings. We placed a total of 30,000 tons of MDOT 1100L-20AA and MDOT 1100T-20AA material. This mix has a required air void of 3.0% with a PG Grade 64-22 liquid asphalt. Ajax Paving received the APAM Award of Merit at the 2019 APAM/MDOT Asphalt Paving Awards program for its work on Telegraph and Square Lake in Oakland County for Urban Streets Projects. The project was a single course overlay that included construction/reconstruction of curbs, gutters, and manholes. Ajax Paving received the APAM Award of Merit at this year’s APAM/MDOT Asphalt Paving Awards program for its work on I-69 in St. Clair County for Single Course Overlay Projects. 1.60 mi of hot mix asphalt cold milling and resurfacing, concrete pavement cold milling, concrete curb and gutter, sidewalk, ramps, drainage, pavement repairs, bridge sidewalk and railing repairs and signal modernization on Joslyn Avenue from Perry Street to Walton Boulevard in the city of Pontiac, Oakland County. 1.92 mi of hot mix asphalt cold milling and resurfacing, concrete base course repair, concrete curb and gutter, detail 7 joint repair and pavement markings on Hoover Road from 11 Mile Road to 13 Mile Road in Macomb County. This project for the Macomb County Road Commission resurfaced 19 Mile road between Romeo Plank and Hayes roads. We milled three inches of deteriorated concrete, patched the concrete foundation as needed, replaced concrete curbs, and upgraded ADA Handicap Ramps. The Ajax team placed two courses of 5E10 Modified Asphalt Wearing Mix and finished with landscaping and permanent striping. A key component of this project was an accelerated schedule to ensure completion by the beginning of the public school year in September. Not only did Ajax meet this requirement, but the project also earned a 2016 APAM Award of Excellence for Urban Streets. A two-course overlay of existing concrete, this 4-mile long project spanned M-59 from I-75 to Crooks Road, a heavily traveled commuter route. During the first phase, we discovered the concrete was in worse shape than anticipated, increasing the concrete patching and asphalt repair work almost tenfold. Before placing the leveling course of asphalt, a substantial asphalt wedge course — up to 8 inches deep — was placed to bring the cross slopes and super elevated sections up to Michigan Department of Transportation standards. A total of 3.5 inches of asphalt was placed over the entire freeway. More than 120,000 tons of asphalt were manufactured at the Crooks Road Plant for this project. This 4.71-mile resurfacing project on I-75 consisted of a 2-inch thick overlay of the three travel lanes (north and south), a 2-inch thick overlay of on/off ramps, and a 2-inch thick overlay on the freeway shoulders. Two lanes were composite pavement, and one was concrete pavement. Over 53,000 lineal feet of pavement joint and crack repair was completed along with the installation of 45,918 tons of HMA. The project was completed within a nightly 8-hour time window that was strictly enforced. Ajax earned incentives for mixture quality, mat density, and joint density. Michigan Department of Transportation ride quality requirements for single course overlays (without milling) resulted in a 25 percent improvement in ride quality. Because work was performed at night, traffic control and safety were of high importance.
